These are step-by-step instructions for populating the MixSID PCB.

You can of course divert from this instruction as you see fit, and follow your own preferences on how to populate PCBs.

Just make sure that you solder the left adapter strip before inserting the SID1 socket.

Solder the capacitors inside and around the SID1 socket first.

Make sure they are placed as close to the PCB as possible.

Now solder the 4053. Again make sure that it sits flat on the pcb surface.

Cut two socket adapter strips of 14 pins each.

Now put both strips into your target socket on your C64 mainboard, insert the MixSID board and level it evenly. You may have to gently bend away some of the capacitors below.

Solder only the left socket strip. When finished, remove the board from the socket again. Be careful not to bend the socket strip pins while doing so.

Prepare the socket for SID1 by removing the middle bar. Take care not to break the socket when doing this. It's recommended to use a cutter knife or a dremel tool.

Then solder the SID1 socket into place.

Now solder the right socket strip. You can put the MixSID board back into its target socket on the C64 mainboard to assure proper alignment.

Now solder the capacitors inside and around the SID2 socket.

Again make sure they are placed as close to the PCB as possible.

Solder in the GAL16V8D.

Make sure it sits close to the pcb surface.

Prepare the socket for SID2 by removing the middle and bottom bars. Take care not to break the socket when doing this. It's recommended to use a cutter knife or a dremel tool.

Then solder the SID2 socket into place.

It's recommended to protect the pins of the PCB adapter sockets from accidental bending before continuing. You can cut a piece of the plastic foam that came with the kit to size and carefully push it on the pins to protect them while handling the board.

Solder in the capacitors for the audio-in circuit.

Now solder in the 2.00mm pin headers.

Now solder in the resistors for the audio-in and digiboost circuits.

Solder in the 2x1 2.54mm pin headers for the audio-in circuit.

Solder in the digiboost potentiometers.

Now for the negative power supply.

Solder the 100n capacitor first, followed by the 8-pin DIP socket for the 7660.

Then solder in the electrolytic capacitors. Pay attention to the polarity.

Solder all remaining small capacitors

Solder in the diodes.

Watch out for the correct orientation. The ring on the diode body must correspond to the ring indicated on the silkscreen.

You may insert a 4-Pin SIL socket now to keep the mainboard audio out routing flexible.

Solder in the potentiometers for volume adjustment.

Turn both dials clockwise all the way to the right afterwards. This way both SIDs will initally run at their normal volume.

Now solder the electrolytic capacitors for the audio-output circuits. Take care to choose the right polarity.

Continue with the transistors. Be sure to place them as indicated by the silkscreen.

Solder in the remaining resistors for the output circuits.

Solder in the pin headers at the bottom.

Solder in the 16-Pin DIP socket for the 4052 multiplexer.

Solder in the pullup resistors for the mixer control signals.

Solder in the voltage regulators. Make sure to place the correct model into the respective slot. Also watch out for the correct orientation. The front side with the writing on it must face upwards in the end, as depicted here.

It's recommended to solder these upright and gently bend them down afterwards. This makes sure that the leads don't directly touch the PCB surface after bending.

Solder in the control signal header.

You might want to consider the different pin header options first.

Finally insert the 7660 and the 4052 ICs into their sockets.

The board is now completely assembled.

Do not insert any SID chips yet.
